The Big Smoke – in 2018, I plan to travel to the #7 in the ranking of the Global Financial Centres… Toronto!
Top 5 Global Soft Power Leader, top position on the Cato World Freedom Index, world leader on the Mercer Quality of Living Ranking – Canada’s claim to world leadership is undoubted. Much of its economic success rests firmly on its largest city: Toronto. Having risen to surpass the likes of Zurich, Paris, Frankfurt and Chicago in the Global Financial Centres Index, the Toronto Stock Exchange not only dominates global trade in Oil & Gas as well as Mining securities, but is emerging as one of the hottest financial centres of the 21st century. Bay Street is beating Wall Street, with talent flowing out of New York and Chicago to go North, where temperatures are lower and career prospects brighter, making Toronto one of the world’s most attractive financial hotspots.
Possible company visits include Canada’s “Big Five” banks all have their offices in Toronto: Bank of Montreal (BMO), Bank of Nova Scotia (Scotiabank), Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce (CIBC), Royal Bank of Canada (RBC), and Toronto-Dominion Bank (TD). Further options are Toronto Stock Exchange (TSX) and Desjardins Group, or insurances like Manulife Financial Corp., Power Financial Corporation, Sun Life Financial Inc., and Fairfax Financial.
While few are aware of Toronto’s large and growing importance in finance, its cultural diversity and natural beauty need less of an introduction. The city is famous for its vibrant music and theater scenes and hosts many movies and tv shows (e.g. Designated Survivor and Suits are produced in Toronto). Countless concert and opera houses, The Royal Ontario Museum and the Hockey Hall of Fame are complemented on the sports side by teams in the NBA (basketball), NHL (ice hockey), MLB (baseball) and MLS (soccer). With immigrants accounting for about 50% of the population, the cuisine and arts scenes are as diverse as anywhere in the world. Located beautifully at Lake Ontario, the Niagara Falls are just about an hour and a half’s drive away, as are many beautiful parks and landscapes.
Hope to meet you in the Global Financial Centre Toronto!
